Harriet (Mehlman) Schneiderman

Harriet Schneiderman, 91, of Storrs, Conn., died on October 12, 2018. She was born August 9, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Minnie (Breitman) and Harry Mehlman and the beloved wife of the late Leo Schneiderman, who passed away in 2011 after 60 years of marriage. She is survived by a brother, Ben Mehlman of Los Angeles; a sister, Lilian Helf of Boston; sons Oren Taylor of Los Angeles; Emet (Ann McCann) of Dallas, Texas; and Henry (Laura) of Pittsburgh; as well as her grandchildren Hannah of Jerusalem; and Joelle and Jacob of Pittsburgh. As a teenager she worked as a camp counselor in Western Connecticut. She was a graduate of Brooklyn College and received her Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Connecticut. In the 1950s she worked as a staff psychologist at a VA hospital in Galesburg, Ill.  She taught psychology and sociology at Connecticut College, Eastern Connecticut State University and Three Rivers Community College (formerly Mohegan Community College). She also worked for more than 20 years at Norwich State Hospital, where she ended her career as the head of psychology.  As the daughter of dressmakers, she excelled at making her own sewing patterns and clothing. She enjoyed cooking, art -- especially the works of VerMeer and Edward Hopper, movies, flowers and literature. She enriched the lives of many with her warmth, kindness, empathy, and light touch.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, October 16, 2018 and Harriet was laid to rest next to her husband at Mansfield Center Cemetery in Mansfield Center, CT.
