Frederick Charles Amon

It is with a heavy heart that the family of Frederick Charles Amon, 81, announce his peaceful passing on May 12, 2018, in Lebanon with his loving wife, Ellie and beloved daughter, Holly, at his side. He was born on July 10, 1936 in Willimantic to Edward and Freida (Krause) Amon of Lebanon. He lived in Lebanon for most of his life.

Fred will forever be remembered by his wife of 33 years, Eleanor, his beloved daughter and caregiver, Holly Amon-Cox (David) and grandson, Joshua, all of Willimantic. He also leaves a daughter, Robin Russell (David) and her children, Ashley, Jordan and Briana, all of Lebanon, as well as Rory Cahoon of Arlington, Texas, who was like a son to him. His stepchildren and grandchildren include Linda Mansolf of Meriden and her children, Amy Brault of Colchester and Keith Mansolf of Meriden; Cheryl Dandel of Colorado; and, Ken and Mary Dandelski and their children, Kayla and Tara of North Haven.

He is predeceased by his stepdaughter, Karen Mathieu (2017) and is survived by her children, Jennifer (Pat) Murphy of Rocky Hill, Jessica Mathieu of Manchester and Michael Mathieu of Wallingford. He is also survived by his siblings, Edward Amon of Columbus, Georgia, Louise Vincelette of Lebanon, Ruth (John) Kuzmech of Naugatuck, Harold (Pat) Amon of Colchester and Alfred Amon of Lebanon. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

He was a hardworking man for the entirety of his life. At age fifteen, he began working on the farm. He worked at his uncle Harold’s farm, Krauseland Dairy in Lebanon, Brand Rex in Willimantic and, in later years, owned and operated his own livestock business until his passing. He was never a man of few words and always enjoyed striking up a conversation with anyone that he met, especially his farmer and auction friends. He enjoyed tending to his home and raising his own beef and dairy cattle, chickens, peacocks and guinea hens. He was an avid raccoon hunter and loved fishing on his boat with his wife, family and fishing buddies. He even stocked his own pond with fish and any child that came to his house was sure to be handed a fishing pole to catch the big ones and release them, as they were his pets, too. He loved taking his daughter Holly on 4H and FFH trips and helping her show cows and chickens at fairs. He played softball for the Iron Horse in the Willi Mac League. He was an avid UCONN basketball and Red Sox fan. He was a longtime member of the Lebanon Grange 21, including serving as Master, one of his favorite positions. He loved family gatherings and picnics and was never at a loss to come up with a good dirty joke. He was the “rock” of the family and the “Go To” guy whenever anyone needed help or to fix anything. You could be sure that he had what was needed in his workshop or shed. He was the master of “tinkering.” He would often be seen driving one of his many tractors up and down Route 289 to rake or bail hay or plow family and neighboring driveways.

A special thank you to Hospice Nurse Holly O’Connor and staff for helping his family keep Fred comfortable and at home during his final month of life.

A service will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 10:30AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Village Hill Road, Lebanon, CT. His remains will be brought to the church on his old John Deere tractor and then to the New Lebanon Cemetery in his favorite Ford 350 Super Duty. A fitting final ride for an unforgettable man that touched the lives of so many people.
