Betty M. (McCombs) DeBoer

Betty (McCombs) DeBoer, 86, of Mansfield Center, died on Thursday March 8, 2018 at her home after a brave fight with cancer, a fight she chose to wage at home in the company of her family and friends.  She was born on June 28, 1931, in Greenwood, SC, to the late Charles E. and Ruby (Davis) McCombs.  Betty married L. Richard DeBoer on July 23, 1960 in Greenwood SC, a committed marriage of 57 Years.  Betty was proud of her southern heritage, in spite of her 57 years of residency in Connecticut. Betty’s southern heritage remained strong, accent and all.  There was always a gallon of sweet tea in the fridge and a pecan pie on the table. Betty was the anchor of the household raising four children and helping with the family businesses. She never complained about answering the phone for the rental business or chasing cows all hours of the night.  Betty helped the family remain self-sufficient by freezing fruits and vegetables raised on the family farm, preparing homecooked meals made with homegrown pork, chicken and beef.  In addition to her husband Richard, Betty is survived by four children, Lowry Richard DeBoer Jr, Tamra D. Coleman and her husband Brian, Charles DeBoer and his wife Dawn and Diana DeBoer Coker and her husband Ty; five grandchildren, Brandon Coleman, Megan Coleman, of Mansfield Center, Benjamin Milner IV, Charles Milner of Greenwood, SC and Michael DeBoer of Mansfield Center CT.  Betty’s family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday March 11, 2018 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic.  Her funeral service will be held Monday March 12, 2018 at 10:00am at Potter Funeral Home, with burial to follow at the Mansfield Center Cemetery.  A memorial service in Greenwood, SC to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations maybe made to Lustgarten Foundation, at www.lustgarten.org.
