Barbara Anne Dodd Protheroe, 90, of Brooklyn CT, formerly of Ashford CT, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 22, 2018 in Putnam CT. Born in South Hampton NY, on February 8, 1928, Barbara was the youngest of seven children of the late Phillip Harrison and Bertha Lawrence (Hitchcock) Dodd. Barbara spent her early years on Long Island, NY prior to coming to Connecticut and where she graduated from Greenwich High School in 1945. She earned her Bachelor Degree from Western Maryland College in 1949 and a teaching degree from Towson State College shortly thereafter. Barbara subsequently taught at the elementary level in Maryland, Connecticut, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Barbara married the love of her life, the late Donald W. Protheroe, Sr., on February 19, 1955. Together they had two children, Donald Jr., and Parrish. After moves to Michigan and Pennsylvania for Don’s career, Barbara and Don settled in Ashford where Barbara would remain in her residence for the next 48 years. A self-proclaimed “tough old bird,” Barbara continued to do what she did best after Don passed in 2011: collect friends, warm hearts, and live life with grace and dignity. In her later years, nothing made her happier than spending time with her grandchildren, her German Shepherd Blitz, vacationing in Maine and going out for breakfast with her family and friends. Mom, Memah, Nana, Barbara, Bar, Babs, Babsie, will be forever missed by son Donald W. Protheroe Jr. and his wife Molly of S. Thomaston ME; daughter Parrish A. Protheroe and her husband Mario Bellizzi of Mansfield CT; grandchildren Emily, Maria, and Sophia Protheroe, Anna-Maraya Bellizzi and Melanie, Sandra and Mario Bellizzi; great-grandchildren Aiden and Austin Greene; sister Virginia D. Wells; and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Barbara was predeceased by her siblings: Margaret D. Easton, Phylis C. Dodd, Philip H. Dodd, Robert H. Dodd, Mary D. Zepp, and John N. Dodd. A memorial service will be held at First Church of Christ Congregational located at 549 Storrs Rd., Mansfield Center on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 11:00am.
